Xbox 360 HD DVD Player Will Use ATI Decoder
MS announced it will use ATI‘s H.264 decoder in its Xbox HD DVD player. The H.264 decoder is based on Avivo Technology which delivers PVR, HDTV and next-generation HD disc capabilities with vibrant, sharp images, and smooth video playback. ATI Avivo also enables universal, professional-quality connectivity for TVs and displays. ATI is the same company that manufactures the graphics processor for the Xbox 360.
A decoder is a device (or program) that translates encoded data into its original format. The term is often used in reference to video and sound data, which must be decoded before its output. Most DVD players include a decoder card whose sole function is to decode MPEG data.
