Xbox 360 - Image 1Microsoft, in the latest statement from its official Xbox site, has announced that its current-generation Xbox 360 console has hit the 10 million unit sales benchmark in the United States alone. This brings up total global sales to the 19 million threshold.

Microsoft said that the Xbox 360 has hit that milestone ahead of its rivals, Sony‘s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii. It gave credit to its strong lineup of games available and its industry-leading Xbox Live service. The fact that the console launched a full year ahead of its competitors also helped it shore up the stats quicker.

Rockstar Games’ record-breaking release of Grand Theft Auto 4 seems to have been more than a big seller of software units. It also served as a boon to Xbox Live by boosting membership to a total of 12 million after its release. Microsoft expresses confidence that this number will grow even larger as more strong exclusives come in.

With games like Gears of War 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2, and more on the horizon, it’s hard to remain skeptical of Microsoft’s vows. We’ll give you more updates as additional news becomes available.
