Xbox 360 Success Makes Original Xbox Scarce

One earmark of success is when you can no longer find the item’s previous version. That’s whats happening now with the original Xbox console. Apparently, the successful launch of the Xbox 360 has started to make the original Xbox hard to find.

If you’ve visited Walmart.com, Target.com, or BestBuy.com lately, note the absence of the Xbox console from those sites.

These three “big box” websites no longer have an entry for the original Xbox, even though you can still buy Xbox games and peripherals.

Some websites, like GameStop.com and Amazon.com, still sell pre-owned or refurbished Xboxs, but not brand-new, factory-sealed Xboxs.

Remember when Xbox 360s were hard to find? Right after the launch in November, you almost had to have connections with the right people just to have a chance at getting your hands on a 360. And now, they’re everywhere. Now, Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster are easier to find than a new, original Xbox console.

Rumors that Microsoft has discontinued production of the original Xbox began late last year. Is it true? Is Microsoft plotting a big shipment of original xboxes later in the year with a price drop? Only time will tell.
