XMB Project Beta Public Version #1

XMB Project - a more graphical approach to the PSP's Cross Menu Bar and interface... - Image 1XMB Project Beta Public Version #1 with Blue Crystal Skin is a homebrew interface for the PSP, and it is among the latest in a line of PSP XMB homebrew applications and solutions for customizing the PSP’s Cross Media Bar or XMB. The aim of this project is to come up with a menu or Cross Media Bar that is different from Sony’s XMB: something that is more “graphical” and “personalizable.”

XMB Project is all about personalizability and customizing skins and themes (and making your own themes – it comes with a Mortal Kombat background, a Gears of War / Halo 3 background, and other simple feats of Photoshoppery). It even has language options (English, Spanish, French, and Italian).

Of course, this XMB homebrew application (or suite of apps) lacks some options at this early stage, but that’s understandable. As the readme (in Spanish) says, XMB Project can’t be compared with anything made by a firm. However, the following have already been implemented (this list was copy-pasted from the XMB Project page):

  • Psp radio by Raf, Links2 by Raf, PMPavc by jonny, Imageviewer by pensoffsky
  • Usb support, Time and hour, Ttf font support
  • CPU Overclocking: 66mhz, 111mhz, 222mhz, 266mhz, 333mhz
  • Battery States
  • Config file for access functions
  • Png backgrounds support
  • Pmf Gameboot support
  • Mp3 support (Still under development)
  • 1.50kernel Eboots support (1.0kernel under development)
  • Png skins support (By now, manual way; zip way under development)
  • Skin support from XMB (4 themes)
  • Screenshots support (musical note, on 2.71se is confirmed that works)
  • Options menu, with battery info status, percentage (as on xmb)
  • Language support (english, spanish, italian, french)
  • Soundscroll navegation support (mp3 format)

As you can see from the XMB Project Beta Public Version #1 Blue Crystal Skin images at the XMB Project web page, the graphical interface looks nice, but the project still has a long way to go. Fear not – the next version seems to be already in the works, and further multimedia functionality and goodies like “XMBhook, DeviceHook .51 launcher for dh, with firmwares installer on MS” are on the to-do list.

As always, remember that homebrew doesn’t always work as expected (worst case scenario: you damage or brick your PSP). You may wish to wait for feedback from others who have tried XMB Project.

We’re not yet sure exactly who’s on the XMB Project team, but the readme lists the following people to be thanked: “pmp avc (jonny), pspradio and xlinks (raf), image viewer (pensoffsky), devhook (booster), dark_alex (for helping us from the start and through it all, cokete and kofy for the src of klauncher y and to all people who supported this project day by day.”
