We’ve been hearing a lot so far about Polyphony Digital‘s much-anticipated racing title Gran Turismo 5 and how it’s coming along in terms of development. Studio head Kazunori Yamauchi was recently interviewed by magazine Car and Drive and the acclaimed developer revealed a lot of things about the upcoming video game.

According to Yamauchi, Sony is giving them as much time as they need to perfect Gran Turismo 5. Due to this, the developer shared that the soonest the title would be released is Spring 2008 but it is highly possible that it will be arriving much later than that. Yamauchi said that he himself wants to do it right.

Quite interestingly, Yamauchi compared GT5‘s development with the previous titles in the franchise. According to him, it took one day to create one car in GT1 and for GT3, they needed 30 days just to finish one vehicle. On the other hand, creating one car in GT5 took around 180 days.

Furthermore, it was revealed that Yamauchi wanted around 700 cars for Gran Turismo 5 but that would be quite impossible because making the designs alone would take them five years. To compensate, the game developer added that players will be able to download more cars in the future. Some game upgrades will be supplied and sold online as well.

Speaking of which, Kazunori Yamauchi said that one of the future upgrades will concern realistic crash damage with each body panel of each car modeled separately, intact and crumpled and with the resulting changes in light and shadow. However, this will come later more than sooner because the physics engine still needs to be updated and car companies are not so keen on having their cars depicted with damage.
