Yoshinori Ono on preserving the Street Fighter series’ core feel
Last time, Street Fighter 4 producer Yoshinori Ono talked about the impetus behind the game. This time, he’s tackling a debatable topic: why have a Street Fighter game that looks 3D but plays 2D.
According to Mr. Ono, it’s all a matter of preserving what made the earlier Street Fighter games so fun to play.

Capcom‘s decision to have Street Fighter 4 play in 2D instead of 3D may have elicited mixed opinions from fans of the series, but according to Street Fighter 4 producer Yoshinori Ono, certain things had to be given priority in the game over certain other things.
For instance, Mr. Ono decided to put his foot down as far as 2D was concerned because he wanted to maintain the one-on-one arena feel of Street Fighter games of old. To have the action in 3D, Mr. Ono said, would significantly alter the fun “core feel” of the series entirely, and that’s something he doesn’t want to do.
This is not to suggest that Capcom and Mr. Ono aren’t interested in making 3D fighting games at all. All that Mr. Ono asked his colleagues at Capcom was to keep their hands off Street Fighter 4, and depending on how it fares later on, they may go on to make any 3D fighting game they choose to.
Mr. Ono talked about other related topics, such as interactive background stages and telltale injuries in Street Fighter 4. For additional info, check out the full video below.
