Yu-Gi-Oh! Online Duel Evolution hits open beta

Well, it's true!

You have to admit, those duel disks they use for card battles would actually be kind of cool if they worked on the same premise as the show. Since they don’t, you’ll have to settle for tabletops or go online to battle the best card players in the world.

Konami‘s announced that Kazuki Takahashi‘s card-carrying fantasy series is headed for an even more permanent stay in the online universe. Open Beta signups have begun for Yu-Gi-Oh! Online Duel Evolution, the latest version of the online game to hit the world. Replacing Yu-Gi-Oh! Online, the beta version of Duel Evolution will be free to play till the game goes live, which means that there will definitely be a lot of dueling going on once more players sign up.

The system has been revamped from previous iterations of the game, with an enhanced in-game and card battle interface, customizable avatars and the addition of more than 650 new cards for players to use. Their pay-to-play DuelPass system is also working for this game, so expect to pay for more DuelPass points to fight other players once it goes live. Existing players of the game will also be have all their character, statistics, and cards transferred so they can keep playing without the hassles and frustration of trying to earn rare cards.

Yeah, it doesn’t sound like very macho or cool to play cards like that, but somehow, being able to shout out special attacks and call for an awe-inspiring Exodia, the Forbidden One auto-win is still a lot of geeky fun.
