First Deus Ex 3 Details Emerge - Image 1Well it’s about time we heard more on Deus Ex 3 (PS3, 360). First off, for those who are worrying for the third installment of the controversial series, put your minds at ease: the creators of the original game gave Deus Ex 3 their blessings.

The latest issue of PC Zone reveals details on the game’s story, protagonist, and gameplay, and it sounds like a worthy addition to the franchise. The story was drafted in consultation from the original writer Sheldon Pacotti, and with the blessing of the original creators, Harvey Smith and Warren Spector.

Deus Ex 3 promises a “powerful, layered” plot set in 2027, which sets the game as a prequel to the first game whose events were set in the 2050s. PCZ describes the dystopian future in which the story is set:

Deus Ex 3’s vision of the future sees holographic screens flicker atop ferries moving back and forth in front of the Shanghai skyline, now split into two layers with the rich on the top and the poor in perpetual twilight below

The game will have you step into the shoes of Adam Jensen, an average joe private security officer at a technology lab. The lab specializes in biomechanical augmentations, the technology that eventually led to the nanotech in the first Deus Ex game.

His life spins out of his control when a team of black ops commandos breaks into the building, “and using a security plan from Jensen’s own hand, a mass slaughter ensues and the conspiracy begins.”

Lots of changes to the gameplay system as well. Ammo  will no longer be limited to just one type, as it was in Invisible War. Experience points can either be plugged to yourself or through weapon augmentations. Stats will no longer influence combat, but will rely on marksmanship skills. Stats still play a role by influencing a “vast array of fully upgradeable and customizable weapons.”

Stealth will now employ a cover system rather than shadows, and damage will take a Call-of Duty-style auto-heal system. Twenty augmentations have been promised for the final game. They range from:

‘bungee jump’ tentacles that shoot from your back and anchor to a wall when you jump off a building, and the ability to punch through walls to grab enemies in neighbouring rooms.
