DS, Wii lead March ’07 hardware sales

Consoles - Image 1According to NPD, Nintendo is still firing on all cylinders as both Nintendo Wii console and the Nintendo DS handheld are leading the market in their respective categories, far ahead of the competition as far as performance in the US is concerned.

The Wii sold 256,000 units and is comfortably ahead of generation batchmates Microsoft Xbox 360 which sold 199,000 and Sony PlayStation 3 which had 130,000 units plucked off the shelves. Analysts attribute the success of the Wii to the innovative appeal of the Wiimote which opened up a new market composed of women and senior citizens. The distinction of best-selling console, however, still belongs to the battle-tested Sony PlayStation 2 which sold 280,000 pieces.

The price point seems to be a very real factor when it comes to racking up sales numbers. The Sony PlayStation 3 sells for at least US$ 600 while the Xbox 360 is a little cheaper at US$ 400. In comparison, market leaders PlayStation 2 and Wii sell for about US$ 130 and US$ 250 respectively, making the machines more affordable to a wider range of buyers.

The same may be true with the Nintendo DS and the Sony PlayStation Portable. The PSP did well with sales of 180,000 units, but the DS presence is just too much as it sold 508,000. The PlayStation Portable is the technically superior handheld, able to generate graphics comparable to that of the Nintendo Wii and the PS2, but the Nintendo DS is the cheaper of the two and was first in the scene.
