The dangers (?!) of Wii and PS3 pornography

unwholesome indeed.Apparently, whenever there’s a fear of pornography in the headlines, someone’s going to write about the dangers of it. This time is no exception as the Wii and the PS3 are seen as a potential place for the young ones to view naked people practicing their love.

WFAA.com notes how the Wii and the PlayStation 3 can access the internet. Shelly Slater asserts, “But because the Wii, the PS3, and other game consoles have Internet access, it’s easy for kids to access porn.” To make matters worse, this has been helped along by some industrious coders in the pornography business, as some porn sites are now optimized for viewing on the Wii and possibly the PS3.

While it does seem patently ridiculous for that to be the main reason behind kids wanting a next-gen console, especially when porn’s easily found on primetime television, movies, and the secret nooks and crannies of their parents’ cabinets, we will acknowledge some truth to it. It is possible, though unlikely, for a kid to stumble upon a porn site while using Sony and Nintendo’s consoles as impromptu web browsers. It’s also possible that, by some unscrupulous mechanism, porn sites will mislead kids looking for Wii tips into something like “WiiLikeBigButts.com”. That’s what parental controls are for.

But wait. According to the article, “Other parents, however, complain that Nintendo’s scheme is unsatisfactory, and that the Wii browser lacks a “cyber-nanny” or filtering function. “As we’ve discussed previously, the Wii’s parental controls allow for browser disabling and alteration of the “accepted games” the Wii can play, as based on ESRB ratings.

As far as we can tell, that’s a lot of complaining without doing the work. These concerned parents may want to read the manual or check our own tutorial for parental controls so they can make sure their kids aren’t checking out porn. The strange thing is, they’re really hung up on a Wii-centric coverage of this… which doesn’t seem fitting for the kid-friendliest of consoles.
