Igarashi Talks Castlevania

Castlevania

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. The biggest addition to the game is co-op. Since there are two main characters, a lot of new gameplay options open up. Jonathan is better suited for physical combat while Charlotte does better with magic. Since you control both characters at once, you can choose who attacks. You can switch control to either character at any time. The CPU controls the character you aren’t directly controlling. You can also use the touchscreen to tell the CPU-controlled character where to attack.

The WiFi portion of the game will have one co-op stage for you to play with a friend. If you want to play multiplayer offline, you can play several co-op stages. Koji Igarashi wouldn’t give more details on that, but he did talk more about the item exchange feature. You can give items to people online and offline. Your item is copied to them and they lose some money, but you don’t gain any money. After all, since it’s copied, you still keep the original item. By giving people items, you build up points which can be used to buy new items. The rarer the item you “sell”, the more points you gain! Interesting system for WiFi.

He also touched briefly on the Wii. “We still can’t think about anything other than this DS version because we are so busy but of course we would like to think of something interesting and pleasant for Wii. I have some ideas for Castlevania for Wii.” Looks like a Castlevania for Wii might not be too much to ask for after all!
