Sony employed violence as a marketing strategy?
After saying that the defining moment PS3 has been looking for is just around the corner, we certainly do not want to rain on the parade we created. However, we came across a weird commentary regarding past shootings and robberies that involved the PS3.
According to site MediaPython, violence is actually a marketing strategy being employed by big companies. You might be thinking WTF now and we’re telling you, we are on the same boat. The rather weird conclusion was reached after talking to a certain Derek Fentweller, an ex top executive at IBM and was the man responsible for creating the OS/2 operating system. According to the guy:
This is nothing new. Back in the eighties, IBM came up with a similar advertising campaign. We were going to have people crushed to death under piles of computers that were loaded with the Windows operating system in order to show how unsafe the program was. Unfortunately, there were some short-sighted people at Corporate who didnÂ’t want to go that route. It looks like Sony picked up on our idea, though.
We didn’t quite understand that, to be quite frank. Did he mean Sony perpetrated the said violence to show that PS3 is in demand? Or is it the competition that did those to put the console and the company in a bad light? At any rate, we were researching for this Fentweller guy but we can’t find anything about him.
We strongly believe that companies wouldn’t go as far as that just to sell their consoles. The industry is booming and they won’t be needing any abnormal strategies to make profit. But if you believe otherwise, tell us what’s on your mind.
