DS is Canada’s top-selling console for 2006
2006 was a good year for the videogame industry in Canada, raking in a total of CAD $ 933 million (EUR 613M) and bringing up total sales to up to 22 percent as compared to that of 2005.
According to data gathered by the NPD Group, hardware sales accounted for CAD $ 349 million (EUR 229m) of the sales boom (much thanks to the recently released Wii and PS3), bumping up total hardware sales to 43 percent as compared to last year. Canada saw 1.62 million videogame systems sold in 2006, which is actually not a far cry from the 1.35 million revenue earned in 2005. Here’s the breakdown of the sales figures per console:
- Nintendo DS – 374,000 units
- PlayStation 2 – 327,000 units
- Xbox 360 – 252,000 units
- Game Boy Advance – 237,000
- PSP – 176,500 units
- GameCube – 89,000 units
- Wii – 84,000
- PlayStation 3 – 45,000
- Xbox – 32,000 units
As for software, it accounted for CAD $ 481 million (EUR 316M) of the year’s total videogame revenue, which went up ten percent from the CAD $ 436 million (EUR 286M) earned in 2005. It’s also worth noting that the NPD found EA’s NHL 07 (PC, PSP, Xbox360) as the top-selling game of 2006 in Canada. Perhaps because it was developed in Burnaby, Canada?
