The Euro PS3: price vs. value

Examined - Image 1

Since this post is a bit Euro-centric, we’re keeping the values in pounds okay? If you really want it all in US dollars then be aware that 1 UK Pound = 1.96499 US Dollar

The PS3 will be launched in Europe on the 23 of March. You all know that already, and you’ve all probably heard of the complaints that the £425 price tag seems a bit too high, especially when you take into consideration that this aforementioned price isn’t a direct conversion of the Euro price tag which is €599 or only £395. What’s even worse is when you convert the North American price tag you only get £305.

Okay, before you folks throw vegetables (do you still do that? aren’t flying penises all the rage now-a-days?), Edge Online reports that if you consider all the hidden/optional (choose your terminology) costs involved in the Xbox 360 you get this:

Xbox 360: £280
HD DVD Player: £130
Wireless Networking Adapter: £60
12 months’ Xbox Live Gold membership: £40
Play & Charge Kit: £15
Total: £525

Getting the extra stuff for your PS3 (component and HDMI leads, a bluetooth headset, an additional joypad, and a game) will cost you around £569 So price-wise, if you try your best to get both consoles to offer the same features, PS3 and the Xbox 360 costs just about the same. (But yeah, to be fair, the Xbox does let you “enter” at only £280)

So what should we ultimately judge the PS3 by? Edge Online suggests that we look at value. Value-wise we have to consider the three main functions that the PS3 is set to do: the PS3 will let you play HD movies, the PlayStation Network should be a decent service, and there should be Games to play for the system.

Since we think we’ve talked enough about Blu-ray for now, and Sony is still mum about those awaited PS Network download fixes (let us download while we play!), we’ll just give you a list of available games for the PS3 come Euro Launch, and the available launch titles via PS Network. We’ll let you guys decide if it’s worth it.

Get the list after the Jump.
