Yes, Sony confirms that the service will be global. Yes, it will be free for download. Of course, items needed to pimp your Home, have to be bought on the store. Closed beta will be later this spring, official launch will be later this year. Supported Languages so far include: Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The download is targeted to be just under 500 megabytes.
Aside from just furniture, you’ll be given options to purchase new landscapes and apartments. They hint that you can even eventually build your own neighborhood. They will provide tools that folks will need to generate player-created content. You’ll be able to use your virtual space to share movies, music, and photos stored in your PS3’s HDD. There will be game-specific lobbies.
Finally – we leave this last because some of you folks are still allergic to microtransactions – lobbies will be created by first and third parties to allow for “user interaction and commerce.” We’ll also leave you folks with Sony’s explanation of how this is not an Xbox Live ripoff:
Home is a first of its kind 3D community that allows for open interaction between consumers, SCE and third party partners. It is a truly interactive, global community of users. Xbox Live is a static, 2D, text-heavy environment that canÂ’t match the rich community features found in Home. Xbox Live community interaction is much more passive and limited to the members on that friendÂ’s list.
There folks, fuel for your online flaming/debating needs. If you’re going to join a PS Home vs.XLA vs Mii discussion/flame war, at least get into one armed.
