Jaffe explains why it’s possible for China to invade U.S. in HeartLand
HeartLand (formerly Project HL) is probably one of the more intriguing video games that we will never get to play or even see. We say intriguing because the plot involves China invading mainland America. In case you missed it, David Jaffe already cancelled the project but fans can’t seem to get over it.
For the record, David Jaffe stated over at NeoGAF Forums that Sony didn’t can the project. He explained that some of their team members are busy with PlayStation 3 (PS3) downloadable video game Warhawk, and not to mention that there are only so few of them. That’s why, he continued, he decided to work on much-smaller title Calling All Cars.
As far as the concept of a China invasion, Jaffe remarked that this is far from being absurd, not at all. He actually gave a couple of reasons like the game is set in the future, probably 10 years down the road. It is not sci-fi and things just looked like the year 2007.
He even mentioned that China could be the next super power in the world and as of now, we quote, “it will even surpass America in many areas, which it kind of already is.” Jaffe then somewhat switched to a semi-political, semi-reflective mode and commented,
If American keeps sending out troops all over the world in an effort to expand our empire/get more resources, who is left protecting us at home? This was just one of the many pointers to the Iraq war we were hoping to deal with: the fact that Bush and his Boy seem to be more interested in Iraq than really protecting us.
Lastly, David Jaffe hinted that there is still a possibility that the game will push through. Jaffe noted, “It made sense to put Heartland on the shelf ’til we had the resources to do it right.
