Ephraim confident about PS3 on March 23
Sony Australia bossman Michael Ephraim has recently talked about his excitement for the March 23 release of the PlayStation 3 in his country and tackled about how their machine stacks up to Microsoft‘s Xbox 360 and more.
Ephraim told IGN that the response was great in the consumer ranks and all has been going according to market plans. He also said he was relieved after the PS3’s “false start” last November and is looking forward to the 23rd.
The Sony Australia managing director also described the one-year headstart that Microsoft has had with the Xbox 360 as something that is “not insurmountable.” He then went on to express his confidence in their marketing model by saying, “clearly they have established themselves, but we’re focused on our business plan. We think we’ve got a great product, so time will tell.”
Among other issues, Ephraim highlighted that one of the main advantages of the PS3 over the 360 is the fact that it has firmware which can be regularly updated to optimize functionality and maximize the hardware capabilities of the Sony machine. He also took a swipe at the Xbox’s HD-DVD drive coming as an accessory, asserting that “to deliver a media centre application, PlayStation 3 is out of the box. For Xbox, you need media centre software. There alone completely blows that whole price theory….the HD-DVD drive, priced at around 0.”
Finally, Ephraim emphasized the significance of the Blu-ray technology that the PS3 brings to the table. He said that the capability turns the next-gen console into something more than just a game machine can ever be. It becomes a home entertainment system. He also stressed that Home will be a key factor in the Sony strategy and denied speculations that the PS3 will be compatible with PCs, arguing that it’s not practical at this point.
