– Through a downloadable educational application.

If you go by the recent sales of DS games that land closer to the category of ‘applications’ than ‘games’, then it would seem that Japanese gamers are currently keen on these so-called non-games. Then looking at the PSP side of things, one would notice that in Japan high UMD movie sales are similarly pointing out that people enjoy things besides traditional gaming on their portables. Realizing this, Sony is further promoting the trend of non-games as by teaming up with NHK Educational in order to bring English lessons to your PSP.
The product is called e-EnglishGym Portable and is available for download through the Sony Style website. Japanese gamers will be able to download over 60 different scenarios that include over 200 scenes in total. These scenarios are made up of educational videos that teach Japanese PSP owners the correct English usage for various situations. Pricing stands at about $1 per scene or $5-10 for an entire video program that contains about 20 scenes. If purchased, owners will also receive a PDF pamphlet that goes along with the scene at hand.
So will English sell the PSP in Japan? Probably not, but at least now teens can tell their parents they are ‘studying’ when they’re locked in their room using the PSP.
