BioWare adopts another engine for next-gen MMO
While still being completely adamant about spilling details on the mystery title BioWare is working on, they haven’t been keen in hiding the engines they have been licensing from third-party companies. This time around, they’ve bagged StreamBase’s Stream Processing Engine for storing, processing and querying large volumes of data in real time.
It’s exactly what an MMO needs, since the actual game will be handling unimaginable amounts of data in a one-hour session alone. But perhaps BioWare went a little too overboard about licensing a full blown business and government engine for a game. Or perhaps StreamBase was hoping to cash in on the budding MMORPG money-making machines, because you can really never tell nowadays. CEO and Chairman of StreamBase, Barry Morris, explained:
StreamBase is designed to process enormous amounts of real-time information at blindingly fast speeds, making it an ideal platform for delivering a rich online gaming experience for thousands of players simultaneously. BioWare’s MMO gaming initiative is an excellent example of the many kinds of real-time applications that can take advantage of the rapid time-to-value our CEP software offers.
Taking a step further into game monitoring and management, StreamBase’s engine will allow BioWare’s moderators to execute courses of action for cheaters, exploiters, botters and perhaps even spammers to create a healthier online community. But perhaps the most interesting part, for all you BioWare fans out there, is that the engine uses an integrated development environment tool, allowing the game to be developed in a much shorter time than “traditional coding.”
Bill Dalton of BioWare concluded, “After we evaluated the StreamBase CEP software, we quickly realized that partnering with them would cut our server development costs by multiple man years. Therefore, partnering with StreamBase was clearly the right choice to deliver on budget and on time.”
