Cell to be demoed at NAB2007 for video market
Here’s another feather to add to the Cell processor’s cap. The PS3’s Cell processor is slated for a demonstration at this year’s NAB in Las Vegas, Nevada.
According to Electronics Talk, demonstrations of the Cell technology will be held by Mercury Computer Systems and IPV, both of whom are currently working together to develop Cell-based software tools, libraries, and applications.
Mercury is championing the use of the Sony PS3’s powerful multicore processor in a variety of non-gaming markets including medical imaging, video processing, and ray tracing. The deal with video browsing technology provider IPV seeks to expand IPV’s catalog to include “advanced codecs and increased metadata creation and processing” using Cell technology.
Electronics Talk reports that the NAB demos, which will take place on April 16 to 19 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, will feature “order-of- magnitude processing improvement for professional video applications.” Both mercury and IPV will also make available a white paper that “explores the benefits of implementing Cell Technology in the broadcast market.”
