Quake 2 Port for the PSP – Public Beta in 3 Days
McZonk has just posted up some news about his Quake II port. In three days, he will be releasing a public beta for all to enjoy. He has been hard at work refining his port, and absolutely refuses to release anything but a solid game. Among the many additions being implemented is the Quake 2 archive support, allowing .pak files to be loaded. This is a huge advancement in convenience and practicality, allowing the use of one large archive instead of many many single files. Inline models have also been added (doors, ladders, etc.), as well as sky support (see above pics).
One of the issues that has sprung up, is the clipping on the PSP. McZonk has implemented a, in his words, ?dirty hack? to correct this issue. While it does leave some very small graphical glitches, they are difficult to see, and would probably go unnoticed in normal gameplay. This method allows for the black spots to be removed completely while still being very fast. Below are some before and after pictures showing the clipping errors (top) and the fix (bottom).
Even with the clipping errors being covered, McZonk is currently working on a way to address and correct the clipping issues instead of going around it. He is currently working on a new clipping algorithm for the PSP, and will release more info on his progress to developers if he finds a solution. Being that the clipping errors are a PSP wide problem (both homebrew and commercial games), McZonk puts this issue at the top of his list to resolve, even before light and sound for Quake.
Here is the public beta info from his site:
In the next three days the first public beta of Quake II PSP will be released. My testers already played around with this beta version. Thanks to all of them for their work.
Features:
- Simple test level
- All weapons (including bfg, hint: give all)
- All items: Quad Damage, etc
- Different monsters
- Full configurable button layout
- Load and Save (little bit buggy)
Missing:
- Lightmaps
- Sound and background music
- Multiplayer
- Mod support
