Caprice32: Update on SNA support
While uberjack‘s Caprice32 PSP was a godsend to the retro gamers among us, some were a troubled by the emulator’s lack of SNA support. In case you’re wondering how uberjack’s planning to work on this prob, we’ve just received word that he’s not planning to add the said file support. You can check out the details of the developer’s decision over in the full article
PSP homebrew developer uberjack has just announced an update for Caprice32, his Amstrad CPC emulator for the Sony PlayStation portable. The developer states that he’s decided not to add SNA support for Caprice32. As was elaborated over at his blog:
- SNA files are model-dependent. Once a snapshot is created for a 464, for example, it can no longer be used for another model, since the file itself captures the systemÂ’s identity
- SNA files are emulator-dependent. They are of little use to anyone using another emulator
- For the above two reasons, I do not want to contribute to saturation of SNA files on the web, when much better alternatives (ROM, tape and disk images) are readily available
- Treating SNA files as regular image files means supporting save states for the SNA file. This just seems recursively silly
On a more positive note, uberjack does state that fellow developers who want SNA functionality built into Caprice32 are more than welcome to create their own apps via the homebrew’s source codes. uberjack further noted that the emulator’s disk loading inflexibility has been looked into, and that its future releases should come with some corresponding tweaks.
