Another homebrew game that’s sure to be a hit on your Sony PlayStation Portable is OpenTyrian PSP version 0.5, coming from Sony PlayStation Portable homebrew Deniska. As we all know, it’s a PSP port of the shooter game Tyrian, with the title originally released on the good old DOS platform – a pretty solid game. Now, with the additional feature of it being ported over to the Sony PlayStation Portable, it’s gotten even better.
So how does one play Tyrian on the PSP? Quite simple. You control a ship that can pretty much destroy anything in its path, but its destructive capability relies heavily on it not being destroyed itself. Blowing up your enemies gives you money, which you can spend upgrading your ship’s various features (weapons, shields, energy generators, even different ships). With detailed levels and bosses, Tyrian is definitely a fun ride from beginning to end.
The controls are also simple. The analog pad navigates the menu and moves the ship in any direction you want. The Triangle button is the game’s OK button, as well as the button that you jam on to dispense multicolored wrath upon your foes.
The other face buttons (namely Square, Circle and X) serve as joystick buttons 2, 3 and 4, and can be reconfigured whichever way you like in set-up. Select serves as the in-game setup menu as well as a BACK button, and Start functions as the convenient and time-stopping PAUSE button.
If one has any questions regarding the installation of the game, the one simply needs to refer to the readme file bundled in the archive, so you’d best give that a thorough read through before doing anything else. With that said, enjoy!
