Mark Rein: Unreal Engine demo not from Gears of War 2
You’ve all probably seen the recently showcased demo for the improvements being added to Unreal Engine. We also believe that some of you figured that the materials in the demo were lifted from Gears of War 2.
However, Mark Rein of Epic Games has reiterated that they were not. Know the full story after the jump!
Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein has explained to a group of press during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco that the tech demo shown by Microsoft for Unreal Engine wasn’t from Gears of War 2.
Rein added that the materials used in the demo were in fact lifted from leftover bits of the original Gears of War. “You’re not seeing any Gears of War 2 material,” further reiterated Mark Rein.
The said demo consisted of fancy water, more realistic destructible environments, as well as soft-body physics. It also showed off a swarm of Locust on the screen, with a rough estimate of at least 600 insects on the screen at once.
Mark Rein also shared that the new improvements to Unreal Engine will not necessarily be used first by Gears of War 2. “Licensees are free to use things whenever they like,” the vice president added.
