Sony‘s senior marketing manager John Koller recently spoke at a panel on casual gaming at a Wedbush Morgan conference. He let slip that there will be a couple of new peripherals for the PlayStation Portable such as a keyboard and GPS unit. He also gave word that they have a new target market for the handheld.
Koller said that we can expect a new keyboard for the unit which will be “launching in the next 12 months.” In addition, he also announced that a GPS unit will be coming up and will allow PSP users to get “better experience than you get on portable GPS systems.”
The talk then turned to the possibility of porting the Japan PSP TV tuner to the U.S. He said that the TV tuners released there weren’t compatible with North America’s infrastructure, however, they are looking into a “wide variety of other uses.”
Moving on, he discussed the shift in the PSP’s audience. He noted that they first targeted 28 to 34 year old professionals, however, over time the demograph shifted to a younger and multi-ethnic audience.
With both points in mind, Koller said that “the expansion of PSP is going to continue” and that “it’s going to be a very big growth area.” It might be interesting to see if this projected growth will occur.
