“Can you say ‘Waaaall-E’?” “Can you say ‘heeeeell no’?”

A new patent filed by Sony Computer Entertainment suggests that they may have a game in the works that will require the use of a robot peripheral running around the living room as part of gameplay. Interesting. And also sorta ironic considering this is the company that called Microsoft and Nintendo a couple of add-on peddlers.

At any rate, it looks like a promising device. It has a camera that can detect its surroundings, and even a display that can show images. It has a microphone that reacts to voices and a speaker that allows the robot to respond to sounds. There are also plans to add an acceleration sensor, gyro sensor, and even a GPS receiver.

No idea on how this will be used for actual gameplay – or even if it will be used for gaming. It actually sounds like a little robopet tamagotchi or something. Maybe a game-oriented Aibo of some sort? Of course this is only patent filing, so we don’t actually know if this will ever become a reality.
