What Makes a Metroid Hunter Tick

MPHInterviewesmall

Nintendo of America’s Andy has interviewed some of the top Metroid Prime Hunters players (at the time of the article) and basically asked them all – “What makes you tick?” This is a very interesting read for those MPH beginners who wish to be on the top of the game, or would just like to see how these MPH addicted players play! With most of the interviewed players having over 1000 wins, I wonder how they got that much free time! Well, NOA has focused the search and interview on one player, but also interviewed other high-ranking players at that time. Some of the questions asked what te player’s favorite character was, what there favorite mode was and what advice they had for everyone else wishing to obtain high-ranking glory. See the full interview questions and responses after the jump!

At press time, R.A.B. MX was first overall in the Metroid Prime Hunters leaderboard in Consecutive Wins (1083), fourth in Consecutive Kills (1003), and eighth in games played (1543). This elite hunter was kind enough to take a break from stalking the arenas of Metroid Prime Hunters to answer a few questions.

Who is your favorite bounty hunter?

Sylux, because his overall abilities are great (the Shock Coil’s ability to recover energy, and the Lockjaw triangle for example). Sylux is perfect against campers and alt formers [players who spend most of the game in an alternate form].

What is your favorite mode of play?

I like Survival. Since there are no points — just a life count — expert players can’t win easily by just defeating the inexperienced players.

What advice do you have for players who are trying to improve their skills?

I recommend that they practice a lot with bots, and carefully observe the abilities and strategies of experienced players.

What is one of your best techniques?

My best technique is to combine the capabilities of both the Shock Coil and the Lockjaw.

Thanks, R.A.B. MX!

I asked these same questions to some of the other top players on the leaderboard, and here’s what they had to say:

Who is your favorite bounty hunter?

Trace. His affinity weapon and his alt-form are unmatched. — Supreme

Spire. I love how he can climb on walls, and I also believe that he has one of the best alt attacks. — NetGuard

My favorite is Trace. His alt form is very easy to use because of the speed you get when you attack. For a while I was the number one overall leader in headshots, so as you can see I like Trace’s sniping ability. — Cgyflames34

What is your favorite mode of play?

I enjoy playing Capture mode. I usually play this mode with three other friends, and it requires both strategy and teamwork to win. This makes the game more challenging and focused on cooperation. — HR_Alucard

I like Battle mode, using default settings. Deathmatches always show how much

skill a player has, and having sniper control is the key to winning a game — (XNS)Tocom

I really like Survival. The best part of it Is you cannot hide for long because if you hide the radar will say “Player Hiding.” — Cgyflames34

What advice do you have for players who are trying to improve their skills?

I recommend trying to find an alt form that you are comfortable with. If you like cloaking with Trace but you don’t like the way his alt form works, you should use one of the other hunters. You will always need your alt form, and even if you can’t cloak you can still use cover for hiding. Most importantly, never give in. Even when you’re in the red with ten seconds left, it’s always possible to pull out a win. — NS Hunter

Try to play against Level 2 bots for 15 minutes at a time. If you can get more kills than they can, or at least die less, then you can advance to Level 3 bots. Just keep practicing. — NetGuard

You need to know your stages! Many new players that I play have no idea where the health, weapon pickups and good sniper spots are. If you know the stage well, you can gain a familiarity advantage, and if Random is the stage selected, you wont be surprised at the stage that it hits you with. Familiarity with the stages allows you to take full advantage of your environment. — HR_Alucard

What is one of your best techniques?

When the match first starts, I quickly go into an alt form and collect some weapons, health, and ammo. After that, I switch back to biped form to start the battle. — Supreme

When you first spawn it is key that you keep the other hunters’ affinity weapons away from them. When you have your own weapon, scurry around the map and collect the other weapons to fall back on. I usually rely on the Imperialist, since a scope headshot is an instant kill. — (XNS)Tocom

I set up trip wires around corners, so when my enemy flees from my Shock Coil, they tend to run into the trap. — Stuff

I have mastered dodging with the Stinglarva. That’s not just when I’m fighting in alt form, either. If I’m sniping and the other person fires, I can quickly go into alt and it will miss or not do as much damage as a head shot. This is a good trick to know. — NS Hunter

I like to stay undercover more than others. If I do not have a kill, I wait for the other players to weaken themselves, then I rush in for easy kills. — NetGuard

I use Sylux. Whenever I play other Sylux users, they never know how to use the Lockjaw bombs correctly. When you place a third bomb, the three bombs form a lethal triangle that causes heavy damage to the victim caught inside. I see Sylux users who bounce around and place their bombs too quickly, while I take my time for them to move into the wrong spot and place a “triangle.” — HR_Alucard
