James Cameron’s Project 880 – A movie with a MMORPG tie-in
James Cameron (The Terminator, Alien, True Lies…) is planning to launch a sci-fi themed MMORPG called Project 880. What’s interesting about Camerons approach to the new MMO is that he will be launching the movie shortly after the game. Following in the footsteps of other games that have become movies, the spin on Camerons newest endeavour is that he is purposly trying to get people hooked on the game before releasing the movie, which will be in development simultaneously. He is describing Project 880 as “completely crazy, balls-out sc-fi”, and if it gets produced, it could be the first major Hollywood project that audiences will experience first as a multiplayer game, and only later on the silver screen. Consumers will be emmersed in the exploration of Project 880s virtual world for weeks before they head to the theatre and actually learn the story. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Camerons background, he has more than a new found interest in next-gen games. He holds a major in physics from C.S.U. and he once served on the board of NASA. It has long been a pursuit of Camerons to shoot all of his future films in 3D and he has helped pioneer a wide range of 3D cameras and tools to help capture actors’ performances in order to implement them into simulations. As well, he currently holds a seat on the board of Multiverse, a company that helps new developers create their own games in return for a cut of the subscription revenues.
Although the game and movie are a couple of years from completion, you can be sure that with Cameron at the helm Project 880 will be an intense sci-fi adventure.
