A 10 Million Xbox 360 Unit Lead Over PS3? Not Significant Says Sony!

jack trettonHow big is a million? Six million? Ten million? It sounds a lot to us but not to Sony. Even if Microsoft sells 6 to 10 million units of Xbox 360 over the PS3, Sony Computer Entertainment America Executive VP and co-COO Jack Tretton says that the numbers do not show “a significant advantage or a significant disadvantage as far as we’re concerned.”

According to Tretton, first year sales performance does not determine success. “We’re looking to sell 100 million-plus worldwide. We’re looking to sell 50 million plus in North America.” He was respondingto MS announcement that it expects to sell 10 million Xbox 360 units by the time the PS3 launches in November. He said MS’s standard of success must be different from most companies because, “I think most companies, if they’d lost the billions that Microsoft has lost on the Xbox, would question whether or not they belong in the business.”

Ah, excuse us, but don’t most industry insiders expect Sony to lose big bucks on the PS3, too, especially with its price tag? No worries say Tretton.
“If you look at the cost of the components and more importantly, the value to consumers, you have everything in the box at $399 on the Xbox 360; and it still falls well short of what the PlayStation 3 offers at $499.”

“Sony has faced challenges in the video-game business before and has always ended up on top,” says Tretton. Enuff said.
