A Developer’s Friend: DSFTP 1.8 FTP Server (and More) for the DS

Homebrewing for the Nintendo DS gets easierA lot of us here at QJ just want to download games and applications, but we also should give publicity to things that might help homebrew developers come up with more of the games and applications we so love. Here’s something that might make development and testing easier for developers.

We wrote about DSFTP 1.6 the other day, an FTP server for the Nintendo DS by Bjoern Giesler (bjoerngiesler). DSFTP 1.8 is a whole package that allows more flexible use. It’s still a stand-alone FTP server (like the DSFTP 1.6), but it also has a software component called libDSFTP that you link to your own code (if you have one) that allows you to run an FTP server from your own program (if you have one).

This is a useful tool for developers. While you develop your homebrew game or application, you can run and test it, build a version, and upload it to your DS, all without having to remove flash cards! As unregistered user “gamerlamersuxx0r” said in the article about version 1.6, “being able to push code/data directly to mem via net is a great thing for developers.”

As in version 1.6, Bjoern was kind enough to include the source code of the stand-alone server as an example. The documentation also contains instructions on how to use libDSFTP.

Here’s what the release contains:

  • The stand-alone FTP server for your NDS (in both DSFTP.nds and DSFTP.gba.ds format)
  • The libDSFTP subdirectory with headers and a library to add an FTP server to your own program
  • The complete sources for the DSFTP
  • Documentation for DSFTP and libDSFTP in both RTF and PDF
