Activision prevents release of PS3 Rock Band guitar compatibililty patch
Harmonix announced at Rock Band‘s (Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360) community website that a third-party guitar compatibility patch has been created, but Activision thwarted its release. Until Activision’s decision to object against the patch is reversed, Guitar Hero 3 guitar controllers won’t work in Rock Band.

Those who want to do mad riffs in Harmonix and MTV Games’ Rock Band (Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360) using third-party guitar controllers will have to wait, because Activision (publisher of Guitar Hero 3) objects against a patch Harmonix created to make other guitars compatible with the game.
As promised earlier this month, a patch for the PS3 version has been created to allow “guitar compatibility and support for third party peripherals, including enabling use of Activision’s Guitar Hero III controller with Rock Band.”
The patch was expected to go online last December 4 as Sony already obtained and approved it, but Activision wasn’t fond of seeing its release. “We have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision’s continued objection,” the forum post stated.
Harmonix expressed its desire to let consumers choose which guitar controllers to use in both PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, and hopes Activision adopts Harmonix’ “when consumers have choice, everyone wins” mantra. With that said, Rock Band‘s creators are hoping Guitar Hero 3 will allow the use of competing guitars as well.
