Games division Sony Computer Entertainment said the handheld games unit, already a hit in Japan and the US, would go on sale in Australia on 1 September, priced at $429.95 (Hah!).
Sony will include a range of accessories with the PlayStation Portable (PSP) package including a 32MB Memory Stick, headphones, remote control, AC adaptor and games sampler. Launched in February, Nintendo’s rival DS unit sells for $199.95.

Sony had originally planned to make the PSP available in Australia at the end of the Japanese financial year in March. Sony has said it does not want to launch the product in Australia without a supply of the game units sufficient to meet expected demand.

“SCE committed to, and has delivered on the 3 million shipments of PlayStation Portable before the end of the financial year, but a decision had to be taken as to how these were allocated,” spokesman Adrian Christie said.
