IGN reports that independent games developers in the state of Victoria, Australia, are about to get an early Christmas present. In conjunction with the State Government of Victoria, Microsoft Australia will hand out eight Xbox 360 development kits to the local small-scale game dev industry.

Nice timing for when the Elite hits Down Under, ain’t it? Here’s another spin to it, says MS Australia’s managing director. Each of those kits costs around $ 15,000, she tells IGN (she didn’t clarify if those were US$ or AUS$). In comparison, Wii development kits cost only US$ 2,000 – although it seems that Nintendo’s Santa Claus had to be put in the holding pattern due to Wii shortages. And Victoria plays host to more than half of the Oz videogaming industry.
