We already know that co-op is not in the cards for BioShock 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC), so what exactly is the game’s mutliplayer mode going to be like? Publisher 2K Games has the answer. A recent press release revealed that multiplayer in BioShock 2 will serve as a sort of prequel to the series, giving players a chance to experience the fall of the underwater city of Rapture.

Players will assume the role of a Plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions and engage in combat in locations such as Kashmir Restaurant and Mercury Suites. Players will also be able to earn experience points during gameplay, giving them access to new Weapons, Plasmids and Tonics.

Development for BioShock 2‘s multiplayer mode is being handled by Digital Extremes. 2K president Christoph Hartmann had this to say about the game’s multiplayer aspect:

With Digital Extremes delivering a multiplayer experience for BioShock 2 that features all of the things that make BioShock unique, we’re holding ourselves to a high standard so that we can deliver the depth and variety that fans of the BioShock universe demand.

BioShock 2 is currently slated for release later this year.
