BSU explains Wii’s success

The BSU Daily News recently ran an article on why the Nintendo Wii has been the hottest-selling game machine in the past couple of months. Using formal studies and reliable figures from respected firms as resource, the article revealed the secret behind the console’s charm and even some glimpses of what the future holds.

We all know that the Wii is the most affordable of the three competing game systems currently out there. At $250, even non-hardcore gamers can consider getting one. It has sold 5.4 million units worldwide and is currently placed second in the overall number of units sold, second only to the Xbox 360 which shipped over a year earlier. According to NPD, there will be a Wii in one of three American homes in the next four years.

Yet, the low price isn’t to credit, BSU says. The truth is, Nintendo’s bold move to offer something beyond graphical advancement has worked real wonders. By addressing the top three complaints against today’s games- violence, non-communality and being sedentary- it has won over the hearts of kids, adults, housewives and more.

The Wii has more than just the best controller in the business. It also has the best games produced by first-party firms. It has the most number of E-rated games and that’s something everyone can relate to. “You can play at the same levels as adults, kids, older people, and more than anything, this is a culmination of Nintendo’s appeal to the female gamer,” says Mark Bell, a graduate student at the Ball State University.

Jeni Mendenhall, a junior at the same university, said that the best part of having a Wii is the interactive aspect not only in the online playing field but when you have friends playing over at home and acting all silly. “It goes the same way with anything that makes you look ridiculous,” she adds.

The Wii is looking good in its bid to regain the console crown, nut at this point, it’s too early to tell because we’re very far from the home stretch. If you want to read other accounts from BSU students, you can check out the read URL.
