Bypassing PS3 firmware check (for what?)

Open up a crack, open up some potential problems... - Image 1

Time to open up a can of worms. Reported over at PS3-Hacks, someone by the name of HackITandC was able to discover a way to bypass the checking of your system firmware by a few simple steps. And before we do give you the actual steps, we just want to let you know that this isn’t entirely foolproof. It could work or it could not. I for one haven’t tried it myself (and even if I did try it, I’m running the latest firmware version – so I can’t quite verify the hack), however a couple of people have reported that it does work. Here’s what you do:

  1. Load Resistance: Fall of Man and, while playing, pause the game
  2. Eject the disc and insert another game (wait 5 – 10 seconds)
  3. Select “Quit and Save” and the system should boot the newly inserted game, possibly avoiding the firmware update check

Operative word in that last step is “possibly.” It could work sometimes or it could not. Do this at your own risk. Other people have reported getting blank screens when loading other games (add in the factor of different games from different regions, and the equation become more unstable). Not that the blank screens mean they got a brick, but the whole process in itself seems scary. Hello. Swapping discs?! I never liked ideas of that sort. It could lead to scratched lenses or messed up motors on the inside.

Now just so you know, bypassing the firmware check will allow you to load and play newer games – games that would require the latest firmware – without having actually having the most recent FW update installed on your system.

But as to how or why this hack is helpful just totally eludes me. After all, the firmware update bypass hack from a couple of months ago proved to be pretty useless (yeah, you can trust Pranav T. on that). Personally though, I can’t quite make head or tail of how bypassing the firmware check is useful. BUT. This firmware check bypassing hack could potentially progress hacking development further in the future. Regardless, we just wanted to let you guys know about this certain hack existing out in the wild.
