Cop fired after shooting teenager accused of stealing PS3s
Over at Hanover County, Virginia, a former sheriff’s deputy has been charged with second-degree murder. Peyton Strickland (18 years old) was shot dead by Cpl. Christopher Long (34) when police raided Strickland’s house for stolen PS3s. Strickland, Braden Riley, and Ryan Mills were suspected of beating a UNC Wilmington student and stealing his two PS3s back in November.
So the police went to the house that Strickland shared with his roommmates. The police used a ram to open the door, and Long thought the ram hitting the door was gunfire. So he shot his gun. The bullet bounced off some object (according to the autopsy) and went to Strickland’s head. According to the news article, Long has been a good cop for a dozen years. Now people are calling his house where his wife and two kids live – just to make death threats.
Was there a reason for firing the gun? Well, in the search warrants it said that Ryan Mills has pictures on the Internet posing with guns, and UNC Wilmington police had gotten news that Mills has carried a weapon before.
Braden Riley (21 years old) was Strickland’s roommate, and he was arrested after the raid. Ryan Mills (20 years old) lived elsewhere and was also arrested after the raid. The two have been charged with armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and breaking and entering a motor vehicle in the PS3 thefts.
For some reason the news article included this fact, and I personally think it shows how all this PS3-related violence is getting really out of hand: “Officers also shot Strickland’s German shepherd, who bled to death outside the house.”
As the mayor of Putnam CT said after a shooting during launch, what is wrong with the value system of people? We don’t know, but we sure hope it ends soon. Riots and shootings and robberies, the Gamestop robbery, robberies at gunpoint, and another robbery story.
Does the Boston mayor have the answer: sue Sony for being irresponsible by launching with a drastic shortage that has caused cities damage and overtaxed security forces. You know, if Sony had decided to launch in Europe then there’d have been even less PS3s in the U.S. and eBay prices would have been even higher, and the violence and robberies would have been the end of American civilization.
