Correction: MGS4 does NOT need to sell 1m units on launch day
A few months ago, Ryan Payton was supposedly quoted saying that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots would need to sell 1 million units on launch day just to profit over the game’s production costs. Although it well could have done so, Payton says this was a misquote. Details in the full article.
Developing great games on the PlayStation 3 can’t be cheap, and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is one of the console’s anticipated topnotchers. But does it need to sell 1 million copies on launch day to break even? Probably not.
Last month, MGS4‘s assistant producer Ryan Payton was quoted saying that the game needed to sell 1 million on launch day to recoup production costs. Apparently, this was a misquote and Payton corrects this, saying:
That’s not something you really talk about in an interview. It’s nothing I’d ever say […] That million dollar figure is incorrect. I don’t even know how many figures we’d need to sell to be profitable.
.
Who knows? Maybe Metal Gear Solid 4 would manage to hit the mark anyway. At any rate, there’s still a variable to be settled before we can place our bets: the release of the new PlayStation 3 SKU.
Game sales are largely dependent on hardware sales, and if Sony releases a new SKU that the market favors then that would set the stage for MGS4 to make a real killing. And we don’t mean breaking necks.
