Culdcept Saga Artist Passes Away

SaitoJapanese game character designer Tomoharu Saito has died at age 38. The cause of his death was a malignant tumor that had metastasized in his lungs, even after he had his leg amputated, in a hope to prevent metastasis.

Game design was Saito’s true passion. He had been working in the game industry since the inception of 16-bit consoles and was responsible for the art in a few popular (in Japan) games. His last work includes character design for the upcoming Xbox 360 strategy/boardgame title Culdcept Saga and the MMORPG Sorcerian Online.

Saito underwent extensive therapy that unfortunately did not help. He proved his love for video games by continuing to work even in the hospital. His website has been turned into an obituary, and while Japanese gamers might remember him more fondly than we do, it’s always sad to see a great, inspiring artist pass away.
