PC gamers have gone up in arms about Infinity Ward‘s decision to cut dedicated servers from Modern Warfare 2. Petitions have edged close to 90K signatures mark, but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to change anything soon. Dedicated servers won’t be coming back, but they do have something to take its place.

Speaking on the BashandSlash podcast, IW’s Robert Bowling announced that in lieu of dedicated servers, they will be releasing a new matchmaking service called IWNet. The new service will reportedly give the devs “a lot more control and structure”.

“It’s definitely going to be a change,” said Bowling. “It’s going to be a very different setup than what we’re previously used to in the Call of Duty franchise for the PC. In the long term it’s going to help the community. It changes the way and how we’re able to update and support the PC version.”

As for mods and custom maps, Bowling conceded that he’s not sure if IWNet would eliminate those as well.
