Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed - Image 1The life of an alien trying to destroy all humans is not easy, but creating an entire world as playground of such destructive critter is a meaner task. Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed - Image 1Even at a glance, designing an open world for a video game doesn’t seem like a day’s worth of chores. According to developer Locomotive Games of Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed for the Nintendo Wii, there were definitely lots of challenges in creating the game. Fortunately, we’re allowed to find out how they pulled it off.

In the veins of total mayhem as an alien with all sorts of powers, the big issue that was discussed concerned upgrades and designing levels to make sure overpowered players can still have fun without turning the invasion site (game world in THQ‘s Big WIlly Unleashed terms) too harsh of a playground for new blood.

In order to be challenging whether players have explosive arsenals or not, designers opted to tweak the place so some locations cannot be reached without enough jetpack power.

Locomotive Games also cited evolution of invasion sites as a challenge, as it won’t make a lot of sense if cities you pound to the ground suddenly rise when you revisit. To address this, objectives were limited to prevent players from destroying what’s supposed to be standing in the next mission.

In its developer diary, Locomotive Games did not fail to mention the major change in Big Willy Unleashed – gone are purchasable upgrades, as you’ll have to complete achievements or do side quests to acquire related power-ups.
