E3 2008: DS gets accelerometer, and a newer, slimmed down DS redesign?

E3 2008 - Image 1An official motion card accessory for the DS? Why haven’t we thought of it (except for the developers of the DS Motion Card, of course)? Seemingly encouraged by Guitar Hero: On Tour game with its rather showy peripheral, Activision (now known as Activision Blizzard) unveiled the accelerometer accessory that they’re developing for the DS. Also, there are some talks that Nintendo will put forth another version of the DS, and it’s slimmed down in many ways. More in the full article!

Nintendo DS - Image 1Yes, it’s another piece of *gasp* shocking revelation from the bowels of this year’s E3 event. What’s in store for the Nintendo DS gamers this time? Well, it’s the DS’ very own accelerator peripheral. Tilting and motion sensing with the DS? Fun!

Developed by Activision (or Activision Blizzard), the same company that published Guitar Hero: On Tour, the accelerator will be used for upcoming games such as the next Tony Hawk for the DS. However, some E3 insiders for IGN have commented that Nintendo may release DS cartridges that have built-in accelerometers, which may hurt Activision’s still-developing motion accessory.

Another juicy news that may interest DS enthusiasts is the rumor of Nintendo announcing a newer, slimmed down version of the DS…with a slimmed down price tag. According to some insiders, this sleeker DS may be launched without the GBA slot that is needed to use Activision’s planned DS accelerometer.

If this is the case, then Nintendo’s own plans to put out cartridges with built-in motion sensors will be justified – if the rumor turns out to be true, of course. If released, insiders said that the fabled new DS will come in with a price tag that is no more than US$ 100. Slim, indeed.

Just to let you know: you can actually enjoy motion controls on the DS, using third party accessories and the homebrew games that support them. Check them out in the links below.
