Players looking for a challenge won’t have to wait until the latter parts of Fallout: New Vegas. Lead designer Chris Avellone has revealed that the game will have an optional hardcore mode right from the get-go.

Turning on New Vegas‘ hardcore mode will present players with one hell of a challenge: no more instant regeneration via stimpacks and the like. In this mode, you’ll have to wait a few seconds before you’re back to full health. Furthermore, the player character will be more susceptible to dehydration.

“We recognized that there were some comments on the forums that Fallout 3 wasn’t difficult enough,” Avellone told VG247. “We wanted to make sure that if you really wanted, you could go for the full-on difficulty option.”

Avellone further stated that players can choose to opt out of hardcore mode at any time, but it can’t be turned back on once it’s been deactivated. Those who successfully finish New Vegas in hardcore mode can look forward to a special achievement or trophy.
