Famitsu Gets The Scoop On New Metal Gear Solid 4 Trailer Details

SnakeFamitsu sure has a lot of luck stashed away somewhere as they were able to get their hands on some new Metal Gear Solid 4 details, and a TGS trailer to boot.

Although Konami has not officially said anything about a new MGS4 trailer, the magazine has already reported that the Konami booth at the Tokyo Game Show will be housing one. Not only that, Famitsu also got word from the director himself, Hideo Kojima. According to him, the new trailer will run for six full minutes. Yeah, so it’s a bit short. That’s why they will also be showing the E3 trailer to make up for it.

This new trailer will be focusing on exhibiting the gameplay for MGS4, with some perspective changes, such as having camera shots that will make the trailer easier for viewers to understand. Famistu’s copy of the trailer shows Snake in action and using traditional types of “sneaking”. But what is new in the gameplay is the Octocam. Otherwise known as the octopus camouflage, this new gameplay system allows Snake to “camouflage” himself according to the color of his surroundings, thus providing him more stealth. He can take on the color of the ground, or even the properties of a tiled wall. The effect is heightened in dark areas like caves and tunnels.

Apart from the new sneaking method, Snake will also have the opportunity to negotiate with enemies. This was known as the CQC system back in Metal Gear Solid 3. In MGS4, as shown in the trailer, you can apparently question the enemy for information, as well as get their items and weapons.

In his interview with Famitsu, Kojima notes that one of the big updates from previous titles is that the game is no longer about “sneaking missions”. Instead, here, you now have a goal, and you’re free to decide how to get there. You can have it any way you like it: either by using stealth to get to the goal with minimal resistance, or by going on a killing spree on your enemies.

However, while all those seem like some heavy dose of good news, Kojima has brought a bit of bad news as well. The promise made by Konami is that Metal Gear Solid 4 will be out by 2007. However, it appears that the earliest that the game may be released is by late 2007, at the earliest, as the game still has over a year’s development time.

So does this mean that it could actually drag on ’til the early part of 2008? We definitely hope not. Anyway, we’ll keep you all posted for more news on MGS4, so stay tuned here at QJ.
