Famitsu: Japan divided over DS Web browser

DS Browser

A recent poll by Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu shows that Japan has been divided on acceptance of the Opera web browser for DS which goes on sale later on this month for Japanese gamers. Of those who answered the poll which will be published in the July 21st issue of Famitsu, 55.3 percent said they were interested in Web browsing on the DS, saying that the convenience of being able to check Web-based e-mail and the touch-pen support for text entry will be of use to them, whilst 27.7 percent said that they weren’t interested and 17 percent saying they weren’t sure.

So, whats with the confusion? You either want a web browser for the DS or you don’t. Personally, I believe the problem of the Opera Browser for DS is all down to price. People aren’t happy to pay for something to browse the web with when their PSP counterparts can browse the web for free using firmwares higher than 2.0. People are used to using Opera for free, and now they’re being made to pay for it? Japanese gamers aren’t stupid.

Among the other reasons why people weren’t interested in the Opera browser was because of a lack of Wi-Fi hotspots, lack of support for multimedia formats and being able to access the web on other devices. Will you be buying the Opera browser for DS?

Thanks for the tip Badam!
