Finding out what the Wii Startup Disc is

Please insert your startup disc to startup your disc...We’re not fans of wild speculation, since there stands a good chance that we’d get burned by it (ahem, *cough, cough*, PS3 Sonic faux-boxart, *cough*), so we’ll just mention it and let you do the talking. Remember the “Wii Startup Disc”? As Joystiq reports, Engadget’s Paul Miller may have taken a picture of the answer. Click the pic on the right for a closer look.

In English, français, en Español: “Please insert your Wii Startup Disc. This will set up your Wii console.”

So what’s the current speculation over at Joystiq? Article author thinks it might be a last-minute firmware update. On the other hand, he also says that if WiConnect24 is connected 24 hours a day, then why not get that online instead (unless the network for that’s not up yet)?. Or it could be, points out some of the Joystiq comments, that the firmware in the discs are for Wii owners who don’t have a broadband connection at home – nice thinking from Ninty, if that’s so.

Our readers, back in the “Back of the Box” article, thought it could be any of the following:

  • Popat: demo unit box, release units won’t have the disc
  • Mr Doc: Ninty said *ages* ago first batches of Wii will have setup discs, later batches pre-setup. (I’m inclined to believe this myself, especially after seeing Miller’s pic)
  • BET8390: Opera, some Wii Channels, free Virtual Console game/s
  • ?: calibrating the Wiimote
  • Lyfeliek Heroblade: Wireless connection setup wizard

Based on this latest intel, it’s definitely what sets up the Wii. But sets up what? The Wiimote? Wireless? Opera? The entire bag (the likely answer)? But Miller’s pic still doesn’t fully answer the question, “What (exactly) is (in) the Wii Startup Disc?” Unless he has some pictures of the startup disc in action…
