Firefly: Turning MMORPG by ’08?

Firefly: the series that never was

First, for the bad news: Loyal fans of the Firefly series, there is yet to be any news of FOX Network bringing the show back, and there isn’t any news on another Serenity movie either. For the non-fans wondering what we’re talking about, Firefly was a sci-fi TV series created by Joss Whedon, who among other things also created the “Buffy” and “Angel” series we’ve all grown to love (or hate, depending on your taste).

Set in the year 2517, Firefly tells the story of the nine crew members of a firefly-class ship (hence the title), as they try to survive in the hostile outer rim of a star system run by an oppressive Government Alliance. The series was aired back in 2002 by FOX, and despite its highly praised screenplay and storyline, the series was axed after only 11 of its 14 pilot eps were shown. It later came out with an equally promising movie titled Serenity in 2003, but that didn’t sell either.

Now, on to the good news:

We’ve just gotten word that Multiverse“>Multiverse, the freeware MMO platform provider, has just signed an agreement with Fox to create an MMORPG of the show. Okay, for the fans and gamers alike who are reading this and thinking “Oh, God, not another Star Wars: Galaxies,” here’s the twist: the game is planned to be released as two types: a standard “Make your own character and free-roam” mode for the MMORPG aspect of the package, and a single-player offline mode, where you get to play as one of the crew members aboard the Serenity – the latter of which will be handled like an expansion to the original show.

Aside from these tidbits, we don’t really have too many details on what’s in store for the game, though Multiverse plans to release a playable version of the game come 2008. Until then, stay frosty.
