Fonix VoiceIn now available for PS3 developers
Fonix Speech Inc., a company specializing in embedded speech technology, has just announced that they have finished wrapping up a license agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI).
What this means is that game developers can now opt to use Fonix’s voice recognition technology in future PS3 titles. This also means that games not running on Unreal Engine 3 (previously announced to carry voice recognition) on the console will benefit from the tech.
Readers may remember an earlier application of this technology in the Rainbow Six: Vegas title for the 360, where you could verbally bark out commands to your team. Could this mean that the PS3 port of the game will be enjoying this application, at least as a future downloadable?
Of course, this news also spells interesting implications for other games-to-be: can you imagine whistling to grab a guard’s attention in Metal Gear Solid 4, or barking out commands to a dragon mount in Lair? The possibilities are endless…
