It looks like Apogee’s really hunkered down and made sure the new handheld Duke Nukem games don’t turn into vaporware though.
The company recently showed both the DS and PSP versions of Duke Nukem Critical Mass (the first in the Duke Nukem handheld trilogy) off at the 2009 Game Developers Conference. According to OhGizmo!, the game’s currently somewhere between alpha and pre-alpha, so keep in mind that it’s still an early build when you see these screenshots:
It doesn’t really look that impressive, but again, it’s an early build. While there storyline of the DS and PSP versions are the same, the PSP version is rated Mature and features a Duke that’s more similar to the one in the earlier games. The Teen-rated DS version, meanwhile, will have a more watered-down Duke Nukem experience.
Both versions of Duke Nukem Critical Mass (as well as the other games in the trilogy) should offer about 12+ hours of gameplay spread over 36 levels. The first game is currently slated for release sometime during the end of 2009.
