Gearbox Enters the Wii
Brothers in Arms creator Gearbox Software has officially announced it’s support for the Nintendo Wii. Although the developers “don’t have any announcements to make about specific games” for the Wii yet, they have “enthusiastically” confirmed plans for upcoming projects.
Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox, also took the opportunity to point out what he liked the most – and the least- about the Wii. The unique approach and cheap price are pro arguments for him, also the virtual console service, but most importantly “the sure-bet library of games based on the great Nintendo properties.”
As for the Wii’s weaknesses, Pitchford mentioned it’s lower specs, and the “unique interface” – as this means that more resources have to be dedicated exclusively for Wii development. Due to the different specs of the three consoles, multi-platform games will not be as easy to do as with the last generation of consoles.
From a gamer’s perspective, that is actually a positive change, resulting in more unique games, no more mediocre porting efforts and compromises.
Gearbox Software is currently working on Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Given that Brothers In Arms is the Texas-based company’s most successful franchise, no doubt will we eventually see it on the Wii as well. As a developer, Gearbox brings to the Wii another chunk of the third-party power necessary to surpass the GameCube.
